FELICITY FLUTTER
About Felicity Flutter
Art has been at the centre of my life for as long as I can remember. My Father was a keen Art buyer, alongside inheriting some beautiful watercolours which I grew up admiring. From an early age, I was encouraged to draw and paint both at home and at school. I was accepted by St Martins for my Foundation Course with my sculpture work produced during my sixth form years. However I then decided to switch to Graphic Design achieving a place and a degree at Kingston Polytechnic. After ten years working in the studio at a large Sales Promotion Company in London, I set off on my self employed journey.
I began painting in Watercolours in 1991, this quickly became all consuming as I enjoyed many sell out local exhibitions with my Landscape paintings. After taking part in South East Open Studios, I was also drawn into Arts Administration during the next twenty years which took up a lot of my time.
In 2011, I moved close to the coast in East Sussex, this was a pivotal time for me and changed my preferred subject matter to seascapes. It is exhilarating to be on a beach in a storm observing how the waves behave, with each storm highlighting different colours and shapes. However I also enjoy painting wild skies and inland water.
I work from a small initial sketch and photographs often taken on the beach during a gale; back in my studio, I compose my work in Photoshop, splicing and manipulating my images and adjusting tone, colour, light and shade. From this reference, I then start painting, building up many thin glazes of transparent paint, using both wet into wet and wet on dry techniques, giving a sense of colour and depth, often finishing with a dry brush and opaque white wave highlights and splashes. I often combine pencil drawing with my watercolours to create extra random marks.
I am a full member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art and an Associate of the Wilderness Art Collective. I am also a regular user of Social Media. I have exhibited in London at the Mall Galleries with the RI of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Society of Women Artists and the ING Discerning Eye. Also Bankside Gallery and the Royal West Academy in Bristol, open exhibitions.
Over the years, I have had work in Galleries in the South East. Lately, I have been represented by The Gallery, Holt, Norfolk and Portside Gallery, Bristol. My paintings are in collections throughout Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
